When the drumbeat of World War II echoed across the Ethiopian Ocean: the ancient name for the South Atlantic: it reached the deep, marsh-lined sanctuaries of the Sea Islands. For the Gullah Geechee people, the global conflict was not just a battle fought on foreign soil; it was a dual-front war. While our men donned the uniform to defend a nation that still enforced Jim Crow, their families back home were fighting a desperate battle to keep the very land they had tilled since the dawn of freedom.
I am CHIEF GODFREY KHILL, and as the primary Gullah historian and Charleston researcher, I am here to lead the Truth Offensive. We are peeling back the layers of sanitized history to reveal the raw, unfiltered account of Gullah Geechee involvement in the greatest war of the 20th century.
The Call to Arms: Gullah Valor in Segregated Units
During the 1940s, nearly a million Black Americans served in the armed forces. Among them were the sons of the Sea Islands: men raised on rice, salt air, and the Gullah language. These soldiers were largely placed into segregated units, often relegated to support and supply roles. Yet, their presence was the backbone of the American war effort.
From the docks of the Charleston Navy Yard to the front lines of the European and Pacific theaters, Gullah soldiers brought a unique resilience. They were men of the water, experts in navigation and engineering, skills honed over generations in the Rice-Engineering Territories.
As a Charleston speaker and Gullah culture educator, I emphasize that these men were not just "laborers." They were the logistical geniuses who ensured that the machinery of war kept moving. They fought for a "Double V": victory against fascism abroad and victory against racism at home.
The War at Home: The Siege of Harris Neck
While Gullah soldiers were stationed in the Pacific or crossing the Atlantic, a different kind of invasion was occurring on their ancestral shores. In 1942, under the guise of national security, the federal government used eminent domain to seize over 2,800 acres of Gullah Geechee land in Harris Neck, Georgia.
This was a thriving, self-sufficient community of Black landowners, farmers, and fishermen. They were given mere days to evacuate. Their homes were bulldozed, and their crops: the "Black Gold" of our heritage: were burned. The government promised to return the land after the war. That promise was a lie.
The land was eventually turned into a wildlife refuge, effectively locking out the very families whose blood and sweat had nourished the soil. This is the "Gullah War" that the history books omit.
