Through historical research, cultural education, books, Gullah Geechee tours, Charleston Black history tours, storytelling, digital preservation, and community engagement, the work documents the people and places behind Charleston’s most important—and often overlooked—history.

Preserving Charleston Black History, Gullah Geechee Heritage & the History of Slavery

The Gullah Geechee Church of Charleston is a foundation for preserving and teaching the history, culture, and heritage of the Gullah Geechee people and Charleston’s Black community.

Through Gullah Geechee history, Charleston Black history, historical research, cultural education, tours, storytelling, community programs, and special events, the church helps preserve the stories and traditions connected to the South Carolina Lowcountry, Sea Islands, and Charleston’s history of slavery and the slave trade.

The work explores the history behind Charleston’s historic landmarks, neighborhoods, churches, markets, and communities while bringing greater attention to the Gullah Geechee cultural heritage that continues to shape Charleston and the Lowcountry.

From the history of enslavement and the Charleston slave trade to Gullah Geechee language, traditions, foodways, faith, family, folklore, and cultural survival, the mission is to ensure these stories are documented, taught, remembered, and passed to future generations.
