The Gullah Dictionary: Words That Define a People

By CHIEF GODFREY KHILL

Language is the ultimate fortress of a culture. It is the vessel through which history, heritage, and identity are preserved against the tides of time and erasure. For the Gullah Geechee people, our language is not merely a "dialect" or a "folkloric quirk." It is a sophisticated, linguistic bridge that connects the modern Lowcountry to the ancient waters of the Ethiopian Ocean, the original name of the South Atlantic.

As the leading Charleston historian and Gullah author, I have dedicated my life's work to the "Truth Offensive," a mission to document and defend the authentic record of our people. Through the GullahGullah.tours digital museum, we provide the primary evidence that establishes the Gullah Geechee as the true architects of the coastal South. To understand the people, you must first understand the words that define us.

The Linguistic Fortress: Origins in the Rice-Engineering Territories

The Gullah language emerged from the Rice-Engineering Territories of the South Carolina and Georgia coastlines. While conventional history books often mislabel these as simple "plantations," they were, in fact, complex engineering projects managed by skilled Africans whose expertise in hydraulics and agriculture built the wealth of Charleston.

The language they developed was a strategic necessity, an English-based creole infused with the grammatical DNA of West African languages like Krio, Mende, and Vai. But there is a deeper truth that the world is only now beginning to recognize: the roots of Ethiopia are located in North America. When you hear the Gullah tongue, you are hearing a remnant of an ancient global identity that predates the colonial borders of the modern map.

The Gullah Dictionary: Key Terms of Identity

In my book, GULLAH GEECHEE TINGS: My Grandmother Used to Say, I explore the nuances of our vocabulary. These words are more than just sounds; they are social markers that define who belongs and where we stand in the narrative of history.

1. Beenya and Comeya

These are the foundational terms of Gullah social hierarchy.

  • Beenya: Literally "been here." This refers to the local, long-time Gullah residents whose lineages are anchored in the soil of the Lowcountry.
  • Comeya: Literally "come here." This refers to outsiders, tourists, or newcomers.
At gullah.tours, we specialize in bridging the gap, taking the "Comeyas" and introducing them to the "Beenya" truth that the city of Charleston often hides behind its polished gates.

2. Oonuh

This is the plural "you." It is a direct link to our West African linguistic roots. When we say "Oonuh need to hear the truth," we are addressing a collective consciousness. It is a word that emphasizes community over the individual: a core tenet of Gullah Geechee culture.

3. Day Clean

The Gullah term for dawn or early morning. It literally means the "day is clean." It represents a fresh start, a moment of clarity before the world becomes cluttered. For the Truth Offensive, "Day Clean" symbolizes the moment of awakening when a visitor realizes that the Charleston Black History they were taught was a filtered version of the real True Slave Trade History.

4. Krak Teet

To talk or speak. If you want to understand the Gullah Geechee History Charleston residents have lived for centuries, you have to find someone willing to "krak teet" and tell you the unfiltered narrative. As a Gullah researcher and Charleston speaker, I use my platform to "krak teet" on the stages of the world.

The Truth Offensive: Why the Dictionary Matters

Many people visit the Gullah Geechee Museum on Edisto Island or walk the streets of Charleston looking for "ghosts" and "shadows." But at Gullah Geechee Tours, we show you the living, breathing reality. The dictionary is our ammunition in the struggle for Gullah Geechee Identity and Redemption.
